5 steps to prevent cavitiesNo one wants to get a bad report from the dentist. Whether you are a child, a teen, or an adult – hearing that you have a cavity is a quick way to ruin your day. Fortunately, there are ways to help your children avoid cavities and things you can do to prevent them in your own mouth. Dr. Viviana Waich is committed to dental health for patients in North Miami Beach. Here are some things she suggests to prevent cavities.

Preventing Tooth Decay

It may seem simple – and that’s because it is. While not all cavities can be blamed on lack of hygiene – as some teeth are naturally softer or genetically prone to have more cavities – adding these things to your routine will help your oral health in big ways.

  • Brush Your Teeth. This may be ‘a given’, but many people are not brushing their teeth for as long as they should for real cavity prevention. Sonrisas Dental Miami, along with the American Dental Association, recommends brushing your teeth for at least 2 minutes twice every day.
  • Choose a Fluoride Toothpaste. Fluoride is a miracle mineral that helps strengthen enamel. It is especially helpful for children as their teeth develop and need some extra help fighting against decay.
  • Use Mouthwash. A good mouthwash does more than freshen your breath. Try picking one with fluoride or one that has gum protection and anti-bacterial properties.
  • Limit consumption of sweet foods and drinks. This isn’t just helpful for your teeth but for your entire body! Sugar not only feeds the bacteria in our mouths leading to tooth decay, but sugar can cause heart disease and diabetes.
  • Go to regularly scheduled dental appointments. We don’t just say this because we love to see you – because, of course, we do – but regular dental visits ensure that Dr. Waich and our dental hygienists are monitoring your teeth and gums for any major changes or signs of disease, this includes cavities and more serious issues like oral cancer.
