woman with waterpikShort answer: Yes.

At Sonrisas Dental Miami, we love recommending the best products or tools to help our patients maintain a beautiful, healthy smile. One thing that may shock some of you is our recommendation that all – yep, ALL – patients use a Waterpik flosser. Now, before you click away or roll your eyes, hear us out. . . in fact, you may even start to love the Waterpik and wonder why you never switched sooner!

What is a Waterpik Flosser?

You may have been using the tried and true string for decades, but what if we told you there is a more effective way to achieve – not just the same results – but better results? And, what if we told you that it even feels good? The Waterpik flosser has been recommended to patients with braces for many years. Because brackets and wires prevent traditional string floss from working between the teeth, a pressurized Waterpik is used to clean out the ‘gunk’ behind the braces. But, this has many benefits for dental patients and orthodontic patients alike.

A Waterpik flosser, also known as a water flosser or oral irrigator, is a device used for oral hygiene that uses a stream of pulsating water to remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria from between teeth and along the gumline. It typically consists of a handheld wand with a water reservoir and a nozzle. When the device is turned on, water is pumped from the reservoir through the nozzle in a steady stream or pulsating motion.

How Do You Use a Waterpik?

waterpikUsing a Waterpik flosser is relatively simple: you fill the reservoir with water, select a pressure setting that is comfortable for you, aim the nozzle between your teeth and along the gum line, and allow the pulsating water to remove debris and plaque. Many models also come with different types of nozzles or tips to accommodate various oral hygiene needs.

Main Benefits of a Waterpik Flosser

While we recommend Waterpik Flossers to every patient, you may not be sold on it just yet. Here are some other factors to consider when deciding if a Waterpik flosser is right for you:

  • Oral Health Needs: If you have gum disease, gingivitis, or other oral health issues, a Waterpik flosser can be a useful tool for improving gum health and reducing plaque buildup.
  • Dental Appliances: If you have braces, bridges, or dental implants, traditional flossing methods may be challenging. A Waterpik flosser can provide a gentle yet effective way to clean around these devices.
  • Convenience: Some people find it easier and more convenient to use a Waterpik flosser than traditional string floss. It can be quicker to use and less cumbersome, especially for individuals with dexterity issues or limited hand mobility.
  • Personal Preference: Ultimately, whether you need a Waterpik flosser comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer the feeling of traditional flossing, while others find that a Waterpik flosser provides a more thorough clean.

While most oral irrigators on the market will do the job, here is our recommendation for a Waterpik flosser.
