You may need a root canal for a number of reasons, like:
- Tooth Infection– teeth can become infected from untreated cavities or bacteria. If the infection is severe, a root canal may be the best treatment.
- Nerve Damage – our teeth are made up of many nerves, in groups called the ‘pulp’ of the tooth. When these nerves become irritated or damaged, the pain can be immense. Root canals can provide relief.
If you are suffering from severe tooth pain, it may be a sign that you need a root canal or tooth extraction. This is considered a dental emergency! Don’t wait for dental care! Other signs – besides pain – that you may need a root canal include:
- Chipped or Cracked Teeth
- Teeth Sensitivity – either to hot or cold
- Swollen or Bleeding Gums
- Tooth Darkening
- Decay
What is a Root Canal
It isn’t as scary as it sounds, and thanks to modern dental advancements, root canals can be a quick and simple procedure. More than 15 million root canals are performed in the United States every year, so if you need one, you are in good company. Dr. Waich is dedicated to providing her patients with a comfortable experience, even during a root canal. We offer many options for pain and anxiety relief including sedation.
The Process
The first step in any endodontic treatment, including a root canal, is diagnosis. Tooth pain can be caused by many things, and a root canal may not be necessary. The dentist or endodontist will recommend the best treatment plan for your situation – that may be tooth extraction or simple cavity fill.
If the dentist determines that you need a root canal, you may have questions about the procedure itself. Our team is happy to answer any questions before, during, or after your appointment. When a tooth becomes infected, it can spread quickly and antibiotics may not be enough. During a root canal, the infected ‘pulp’ (or root) is removed from the tooth. The dentist will then clean and disinfect the tooth itself (inside and out) before filling and sealing the tooth (similar to a cavity filling).
Prevention
While many people need root canals, particularly those over the age of 35, there are ways to prevent needing extensive and pricey dental treatments. Brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing daily, in addition to regular dental visits every six months, are the simplest steps to take in preventing dental disease or issues.
