dental bone graftLosing a tooth is never ideal, but what happens beneath the surface can have even bigger consequences than missing a smile. That’s where a bone graft after extraction becomes more than a nice-to-have . . . it might be essential.

Why Getting a Bone Graft After Extraction Matters

Prevent Bone Loss & Preserve Your Smile

Once a tooth is removed, the jawbone no longer receives the stimulation it needs to stay robust. As a result, it can start to shrink leading to a “sunken-in” appearance or shifting teeth. A bone graft helps preserve the volume and shape of your jaw, keeping your facial structure intact.

Build a Foundation for Dental Implants

Planning to replace your missing tooth with a dental implant? Your jawbone needs to be strong enough to support it. A bone graft sets the stage by restoring density so the implant has something solid to hold onto.

Maintain Aesthetics & Facial Structure

Without bone grafting, the jaw might deteriorate over time causing dropped lips, collapsed cheeks, or a prematurely aged look. Grafting protects your natural contours and helps teeth, gums, and facial tissues stay properly supported.

Reduce the Need for More Extensive Future Treatments

Getting a bone graft immediately after extraction (known as socket preservation) avoids the need for larger, more complex procedures later. It maintains the ridge’s height and width, making future restorations smoother.

When Might You Skip a Bone Graft?

If you’re not planning on replacing a missing tooth (especially in low-visibility areas), and the jawbone is in good condition, a graft may not be essential. Everyone’s mouth is unique. It is important to talk with Dr. Waich so she can fully assess. She will consider jaw health, your overall health, and your future smile plans before recommending one.

What Does the Procedure Look Like?

At Sonrisas Dental Miami, we typically perform a bone graft right after extraction (in some cases, we allow for delayed grafting). Here is what our process looks like:

  • Local anesthesia
  • We place the graft material (this could be synthetic, donor, or your own, but we will discuss your options with you)
  • We place a protective membrane on top
  • Gums are sutured
  • We prescribe antibiotics and our own line of probiotics to aid in healing after this procedure

Over the next few months, the graft transforms into new, healthy bone!

What to Expect During Recovery

after dental bone graftInitial healing will take about a week. Stay on soft foods, ice the site, avoid smoking, and follow our team’s care plan closely to support healing. You can expect:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Mild discomfort

If any of your discomfort is accompanied by a fever, please call us right away!

Complete bone integration typically takes several months (up to a year for larger grafts).

A Proactive Step for Dental Health

A bone graft after extraction isn’t just another dental appointment; it’s a proactive step to protect your oral health, your future treatments, and yes, even your face. Whether you’re looking toward implants, dentures, or simply want to preserve your natural look, a bone graft can be the foundation that keeps your mouth, and your confidence, strong.
